President Donald Trump is likely to announce tariffs on China’s iPhone and other smartphones this week, a senior administration official told Recode.
The official was not authorized to discuss the plan publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Trump is expected to use the executive order as leverage against China, which has been accused of manipulating its currency and stealing intellectual property from the United States.
The administration official said the tariffs could impact hundreds of thousands of manufacturers and thousands of small businesses.
China is one of the biggest customers of Apple, and the administration official cautioned that Trump could impose similar tariffs on other companies.
Apple is expected not to comment on the specifics of the proposed tariffs.
The Chinese government has been criticized for blocking imports of iPhones from Apple in the past.
Apple has said that the tariffs would hurt the Chinese economy.
